On the morning of May 21, Vice President Katsuya Okada, who serves as
the Countermeasures Headquarters Chair for the Myanmar Cyclone and Sichuan, China
Earthquake, visited the Chinese Embassy in Motoazabu, Tokyo and handed
over to Chinese ambassador Cui Tiankai a 2 million yen donation collected
by diet members of the party for the victims of the Sichuan Earthquake.
Accompanying the visit to the embassy were the Chair of the National
Rallying and Canvassing Committee (Countermeasures Headquarters, Secretary
General) Sakihito Ozawa and International Department Director-General
(Countermeasures Headquarters, Acting Chair) Tetsundo Iwakuni. Included among the
contributors were six House of Councillors members of the Shinryokufukai
group and one member of New Party Nippon.
Okada first expressed his sorrow by stating, "We offer our heartfelt
condolences to the great many who have lost their lives." In response,
Ambassador Cui expressed his gratitude: "We will deliver your condolences
to the home country. Japan's aid will be used to help the disaster area to
recover. It will greatly encourage the people there."
Furthermore, Okada referred to the party's efforts, saying "I was
surprised the other day in Yurakucho, where there were so many one
thousand yen bills among the contributions. The public's interest is
incredibly high." Ambassador Cui stated, "I think this is evidence of the
friendliness of the Japanese people towards China. This is the result of
DPJ members' long-term efforts to promote friendly relations [between our
two countries]." The ambassador then handed over a letter of gratitude to
the Democratic Party of Japan.
