On the afternoon of June 24, House of Representatives Member Sakihito Ozawa
(Chair, National Rallying and Canvassing Committee), Secretary-General of
the Countermeasures Headquarters for the Myanmar Cyclone and Sichuan, China
Earthquake, visited the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in
Moto-azabu, Tokyo, and handed a donation of 2.25 million yen to Counsellor
Lin Li. The donation was made from money collected by the DPJ through fund
raising activities across Japan for both the Sichuan earthquake and the
cyclone in Myanmar.
Sakihito Ozawa said, "We pray for the rapid reconstruction of the affected
areas and hope that our donations will prove useful for victims of the
disaster." In response, Counsellor Lin replied, "The ties between our two
nations have grown closer due to these unfortunate events and the people of
China are grateful to the people of Japan for their assistance". Lin also
offered condolences to the victims of the recent Iwate Miyagi Inland
Earthquake, adding, "The Chinese people are deeply interested in how the
Japanese government will engage in reconstruction". She noted that China
hoped for Japanese cooperation and assistance and could also learn from
Japan as a country that had much experience with earthquakes. She
concluded, "Providing support for earthquake victims and reconstructing
affected areas is the critical task for the Chinese government".
The visit was the second one to the Chinese embassy by DPJ members
following an earlier visit on May 21 by DPJ Vice President Katsuya Okada,
Chair of the Countermeasures Headquarters for the Myanmar Cyclone and
Sichuan, China Earthquake, during which Okada handed 2 million yen in
donations collected principally from DPJ members.
As of June 20, total donations collected by the DPJ for the victims of the
two natural disasters in China and Myanmar equalled 4.5 million yen, and
the money raised was split equally between these two worthy causes.
