On July 1, Chair of the DPJ's Global Warming Countermeasures Headquarters,
Katsuya Okada (DPJ Vice President) met with Petra Bierwirth, Chair of the
German Parliament's Committee on the Environment, Nature Conservation and
Nuclear Safety, at DPJ headquarters and exchanged opinions on global
warming-related issues. The meeting was also attended by House of
Councillors Members Tetsuro Fukuyama (Secretary-General of the
Countermeasures Headquarters) and Wakako Hironaka (DPJ Standing Officer).
The lively discussions focused particularly on the possibilities for
renewable energy. DPJ Members responded to Ms. Beirwirth's questions
explaining how Japan has not prioritised the development of wind power and
how the abolishment of subsidies for the installation of solar panels have
slowed the expansion of solar power in Japan. The DPJ members also
explained "the Global Warming Countermeasures Basic Bill" which was
submitted to the House of Councillors in the previous Diet session. The
German delegation expressed hope that the upcoming G8 Hokkaido Toyako
Summit will prove fruitful, and the vibrant discussions came to a close. |
