On the Evening of November 17, DPJ President Ichiro Ozawa met with LDP
President and Prime Minister Taro Aso at the Prime Minister's official
residence for discussions over how to handle the fiscal 2008 second
supplementary budget. The meeting was attended by Secretary General Yukio
Hatoyama, Diet Affairs Committee Chair Kenji Yamaoka and Director-General
of Executive Office Tenzo Okamura from the DPJ and Chief Cabinet Secretary
Takeo Kawamura and Secretary-General Hiroyuki Hosoda from the LDP.
During the meeting, Ozawa called for the submission of the second
supplementary budget to the current Diet session in order to back up the
government's proposed additional economic stimulus. In response, Prime
Minister Taro Aso was only able to say that he was making maximum efforts
to submit the budget.
Following the meeting, the DPJ held an executive meeting and decided that
the bill to revise the new anti-terrorism special measures law would not be
debated in the Upper House Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee meeting on
the 18th.
