Statement strongly protesting the launch of a “projectile” by North Korea
On April 5, DPJ Secretary General Yukio Hatoyama issued the following statement:

It is extremely regrettable that North Korea, ignoring repeated urgings from Japan and the international community to desist, today went ahead with the launch of a “projectile”.

The Democratic Party of Japan regards this act by North Korea as a violation of UN Security Council resolutions, and strongly protests this threat to Japan’s national security.
North Korea must immediately cease all words and actions that threaten the peace and stability of the region, and implement complete abolition of its nuclear capability and missile threat under the framework of the Six Party Talks.

If North Korea will not change its stance, the Japanese government should take firm measures, as well as engaging in strong diplomatic negotiations, including national security responses.

At the present time, the “projectile” has not been confirmed to have fallen within Japanese territory, but we call on the government to verify whether the launch could have been prevented by diplomatic efforts, as well as investigating the various issues that have come to light, including those relating to the system for confirming and communicating information, and make doubly sure that every effort is taken to prevent crises from occurring and to d
