Statement on achieving a change of government to protect people's livelihoods
On July 21, the DPJ issued the following statement:

Today, the House of Representatives was dissolved, and the long-awaited general election is to be held on August 30. Through this election, the DPJ aims to achieve a change of government. The election will represent the judgment of the people on the performance of the Aso administration over the past year and the LDP-New Komeito coalition over the past four years.

Under the LDP-New Komeito coalition, the gap between rich and poor has widened and people's livelihoods and Japan's regions have suffered. In addition, due to the global recession, Japan's economy has been hit badly, even worse than economies in Europe and North America, and people's employment and livelihoods are falling deeper into crisis.

However, in response to this, the Aso Cabinet and the LDP-New Komeito Administration has simply repeated wasteful, shortsighted spending and are planning to increase consumption tax without first tackling the problems of unnecessary tax expenditure and the overwhelming influence of members tied to vested interests and bureaucrats. They have caused great difficulties for vulnerable people, including senior citizens aged 75 and over and disabled persons. Neither have they found a solution to the problem of "vanishing pensions records".

The DPJ will base its election campaign on squarely debating the policies outlined in our manifesto. Through cooperation with the other opposition parties we will aim to achieve a change of government so that we can bring about an era of politics that puts "people's lives first" and protect the livelihoods of the people. If we are unable to change Japan through this election then Japan and Japanese regional society will collapse and people's future employment and a livelihoods cannot be guaranteed. Please support the DPJ's fight.
