Hatoyama administration officially launched

On September 16, Yukio Hatoyama was nominated as the 93rd Prime Minister of Japan in the special Diet session that had been convened that same day. In the evening, the Hatoyama coalition cabinet, consisting of members from the DPJ, the Social Democratic Party and the People’s New Party was launched. This is the first non-LDP government in sixteen years, the last such government being the 1993 Hosokawa administration. It is also the first time since the war that an opposition party has gained an absolute majority, and realised a change of government. It can truly be said that the Japanese people have worked together to create history.

The members of the Hatoyama cabinet were formally appointed during a ceremony at the Imperial Palace, and the first cabinet meeting was held at the Prime Minister’s Residence. Following the cabinet meeting, the new cabinet members gathered for a commemorative photo shoot.

The following is the line-up of the Hatoyama cabinet.
