Ozawa announces new party executive at press conference

On October 7, DPJ Secretary General Ichiro Ozawa held a press conference at party headquarters and announced the new line-up for the party executive.

First of all, Ozawa said that he had asked the Chair of the DPJ Caucus in the House of Councillors Azuma Koshiishi to accept the post of Acting Secretary General, explaining, “I envisage that I will be travelling around the country with increasing frequency for reasons related to electoral strategy and the like, and I would like Koshiishi to carry out [the role of Acting Secretary General as well] in my absence.”

In response to a reporter’s question, Ozawa replied, “I have not discussed the selection of the executive with the President since he has entrusted it to me. I did discuss it with Koshiishi. I think that we have achieved a good balance of youth, maturity and seniority.”

In response to a question asking whether he had abolished the posts of Acting President, Vice President and, Deputy Secretary General, Ozawa replied, “I have not abolished them. I just did not fill them this time round.”

Further more, in response to a question regarding whether the Policy Research Committee had been abolished, Ozawa said, “We have moved to a genuine Cabinet system.” He added that the members of the Secretary General’s Office would be responsible for bills that related to political issues such as the Diet Law and the Public Election Law.
