Third (Japan-China) Exchange and Discussion Mechanism meeting gets underway
|
On November 10, the third meeting of the “(Japan-China) Exchange and Discussion Mechanism”, held periodically between the DPJ and the Chinese Communist Party, started. A Chinese Communist Party delegation headed by International Department Minister Wang Jiarui, visiting Japan at the invitation of the DPJ, represented the Chinese side.
At the start of the meeting, DPJ Acting Secretary General and deputy chair of the Mechanism Azuma Koshiishi said, “This meeting has now become a forum for exchange between the ruling parties of Japan and China. I would like us to realise the fruits of our discussions in policies, even with regard to difficult issues.” He welcomed the Chinese delegation’s visit, saying, “We hope that the new Japan can overcome its history, and act as a bridge between the nations of Asia. The DPJ is also planning to send a delegation to China in December, and we expect to be able to further deepen our exchanges.”
Wang gave an address touching on the following points: (1) that no country was capable of responding to the current financial crisis single-handedly, and that we are facing common issues shared around the globe, (2) that it is necessary to change the economic growth model, and (3) Japan and China, who are now standing at the start of a new phase in their history, need to sustain a strategic partnership. He commented that since the DPJ had become the party of government, a new vitality would be created.
Wang also expressed the Chinese expectations, stating, “We value the DPJ’s Asian diplomacy initiative and would like to see this reflected in basic policy. We still have some unresolved issues, but we would like to proceed toward finding actual resolutions. Chinese-Japan cooperation requires speed.”
Wang’s delegation will stay in Japan until November 12. On the afternoon of November 10, a number of separate sessions will take place on various themes, and on November 11, DPJ Secretary General Ichiro Ozawa is scheduled to deliver a welcome address.
