|
On March 5, the Director General of the DPJ International Department Yukihisa Fujita met with Chilean Chargé d’Affaires Miguel Poklepovic, in order to express his condolences for the massive earthquake that had occurred near the city of Concepcion on February 27. On behalf of the DPJ, Fujita expressed condolences for disaster victims and their families, as well as best wishes for a speedy recovery from the disaster. He also passed over a donation of 500,000 yen from the party.
Poklepovic said, “I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to Prime Minister Hatoyama and Secretary General Ozawa. This earthquake is a terrible tragedy, but I have been extremely touched by the fellow feeling shown by the DPJ and the Japanese people. We have received many messages of encouragement. It is estimated that the number of dead will exceed a thousand people. Terrible damage has also been caused to infrastructure such as roads and land bridges.”
Fujita stressed, “I am sure that our government will provide all possible aid. Japanese NGOs are also doing their utmost. If there is anything we can do, please let us know.”
