Enlarged meeting of Policy Research Committee executive held
|
On August 27, the seventh enlarged meeting of the DPJ Policy Research Committee executive was held.
At the start of the meeting, DPJ Policy Research Committee Chair Koichiro Gemba reported, “I submitted the proposals made yesterday by the Chairs of each policy subcommittee to the meeting of Cabinet members concerned with economic affairs held yesterday and to the today’s informal meeting of Cabinet members [held following the Cabinet meeting].” Gemba went on to reveal that “In response to our sense of crisis, the Prime Minister is scheduled to make some comments regarding the future handling of the situation at some point today.”
The content of the party proposal included prioritising monetary policy to reduce the strong yen, a stress that what was needed was not run-of-the-mill economic measures that emphasized speed, but a link to the “growth strategy”, with the environmental sector and overcoming the issue of an aging society with a low birthrate being fundamental issues, the need for earthquake-proofing, including schools, hospitals and residential homes, and to generally bring forward the implementation of deregulatory reforms.
The meeting also heard a report from Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Motohisa Furukawa regarding the basic philosophy “Regarding the Summary of Budget Requests for Fiscal 2011” (tentative translation) announced by Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshito Sengoku in his regular press conference that morning.
