Kan holds press conference after re-election

On September 14, DPJ President Naoto Kan held a press conference following the extraordinary party convention for the DPJ President’s election. Kan expressed his determination to make every effort to fulfil his responsibilities as party President and Prime Minister following his re-election.

At the start of the press conference, Kan stated his appreciation for the fact that the DPJ President’s election had taken place in an open manner, with the participation not only of party members, supporters and local assembly members who possessed the right to vote, but from many members of the public who had offered their opinions and taken part voluntarily in the process. He stressed that it was thanks to the support of the public that he had been able to gain re-election as party President. Kan went on to say that as the incumbent he had campaigned for the election while carrying out his public duties, and commented, “Being re-elected as President has firmed up my resolve, and I once more feel the weight of my responsibilities. I intend to make every effort to fulfil my responsibilities and to devote myself to my duties both as President and Prime Minister.”

In response to the question: “What is your evaluation of and feelings toward former Secretary General Ozawa now that the election is over?” Kan replied, “While engaging in a policy debate I once again felt the depth of Mr. Ozawa’s insight.” With regard to administering the government following the election, Kan said, “I received a great deal of support and view that positively. It is still just three months since I took control of the government. During these three months I have tackled many issues, including drawing up a new growth strategy, but now that I have once more been elected as President and will continue as Prime Minister, I would like to really get down to business. From now on, I intend to get serious, by for example creating a special team to work toward the realization of the new growth strategy. I would like the public to watch closely.”
