On September 26, DPJ President, Prime Minister Naoto Kan responded to reporters’ questions. With regard to Chinese calls for “apologies and compensation” over the incident involving a collision with a Chinese vessel off the Senkaku Islands, Kan said, “The Senkaku Islands are an integral part of Japanese territory, and apologies and compensation are unthinkable.” With regard to improving relations with China, he said, “It is necessary for both parties to calmly work to deepen our mutual strategic relationship.”
Kan also commented on the release of the captain of the Chinese vessel, saying, “It was a judgement made by the prosecutors’ office based upon the law.”
