First meeting of Joint Council held between DPJ Fukushima and DPJ HQs

On February 24, the first meeting of the “Joint Council convened between DPJ Prefectural Headquarters Fukushima and DPJ Headquarters” (tentative translation) was held. The Joint Council was established to accelerate the implementation of policies which fully reflect the thoughts of the residents of Fukushima and the situation within the prefecture, in order to further reconstruction efforts following the nuclear accident.

On March 30 last year, directly following the Great East Japan Earthquake, the DPJ established a Fukushima prefecture liaison bureau within the party’s Great East Japan Earthquake Strategy Headquarters, and has continued to act as a conduit for voices from the region, receiving requests from local governments, organizations and residents of the prefecture and communicating them to the administration, in conjunction with the party’s prefectural headquarters in Fukushima. The aim of the Joint Council is to strengthen these liaison efforts in order to ensure that information is shared and a speedy response in place, by discussing the response to various issues faced by Fukushima prefecture.

The members of the Joint Council comprise mainly of representatives from DPJ Fukushima and the Fukushima prefecture liaison bureau, and meetings are scheduled to take place once a month, with the venue alternating between Tokyo and Fukushima. When meetings are held in Fukushima, if necessary this will be combined with exchanges between local organizations and residents, and inspection visits within the prefecture.
