President Kaieda also reported the appointment of Hirotaka Akamatsu (R) as Vice Speaker of the House of Representatives and Kazuhiro Haraguchi (R) as Chair of the DPJ Caucus, House of Representatives.

Following the above announcements, Secretary General Goshi Hosono delivered an inaugural address. He stated, “Our first task is measures for our colleagues who had to choke back tears in the general election. Furthermore, from the start of the new year, we need to immediately travel across the country and once again communicate the principles of DPJ to the people as much as possible. At the same time, in the wake of the general election defeat, a committee must be set up to verify the reasons for the defeat and to revitalize the DPJ. In parallel with this, we need to take note that the mission statement of the party has not changed even once since 1998. We were criticized in the recent election campaign that it is hard to see what the DPJ’s positions and principles are. We need to immediately revise the party’s mission statement, responding to these criticisms.” These three items proposed by Hosono were approved.

Hosono also expressed his intention to postpone the party convention, which the DPJ was thinking of holding in mid-January, until the mission statement was revised. He proposed, “The party convention will be held at an appropriate time. We will establish a reform party structure.” This too was approved by a round of applause.
