Hosono announces DPJ party convention for Feb 24
|
On the afternoon of January 15, Secretary General Goshi Hosono held a regular press conference at DPJ party headquarters, during which he remarked on matters such as (1) a decision to hold a DPJ party convention on February 24; (2) the start of work in the DPJ Mission Statement Development Committee; (3) travel to different regions on foot that started from the end of last week, (4) a Secretary Generals’ meeting among opposition parties to be held next week.
Hosono stressed the importance of maintaining the present course on discussions for party revitalization and the party’s mission statement before the elections of the Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly and House of Councillors. He said, “We made the decision to hold a party convention on February 24 out of the belief that we must affirm party policies at the earliest possible date through a party convention featuring the attendance of regional organizations.” Details will be decided at the board next week.
Regarding the DPJ Mission Statement Development Committee that started work the same day, Hosono said, “We have been deliberating on this matter for about 2 years under the leadership of Chair Masayuki Naoshima. We have now organized our ideas. I will act as Secretary General to coordinate further discussion based on our work up until now. With the support of former Chair Naoshima as a Committee advisor, we want to work toward presenting a rough draft as soon as possible.” He also proclaimed that he wanted to consider this matter at least once with prefectural chapters before the party convention on February 24, adding, “We will hurry to make the mission statement, because it requires consideration at the standing officers councils in prefectural chapters and extraordinary meetings to be held between the end of January and beginning of February.” Conversely, concerning discussion toward party revitalization, Hosono explained, “Work has just started and we would like to have a midterm summary by February 24.”
