Statement on launch of ballistic missiles by North Korea
|
On March 26, DPJ Next Minister of Defence Shu Watanabe and Next Minister for Foreign Affairs Tetsuro Fukuyama issued the following statement:
Today, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) launched two ballistic missiles.
These missile launches violate the terms of the Japan-DPRK Pyongyang Declaration, the Six Party Talks Joint Statement and related United Nations Security Council resolutions. We strongly protest these actions by the DPRK.
The Japanese government, in addition to urging the DPRK to exercise self-restraint, should carry out the speedy provision of appropriate information in order to ensure the safety of aircraft and shipping operating in the vicinity. Moreover, the government, while continuing to implement thorough warning and surveillance activities, and deterrence, should also coordinate with the international community, including the United States, the Republic of Korea, China and Russia, and make further efforts to speedily resolve the nuclear, missile and abduction issues.
