Kaieda delivers remarks at general meeting and study sessions of “Network Forum for Female Politicians”

On July 21, the DPJ held a general meeting and study sessions of the “Network Forum for Female Politicians” in Tokyo. DPJ President Banri Kaieda attended the meeting.

Kaieda stated in his remarks, “This Forum has a 12-year history. It was started early on in the DPJ’s history, which is now in its 16th year.” Kaieda continued, “A gender equality committee has been established in all of our prefectural chapters. This is an essential requirement for ensuring that as many female members as possible are elected in next spring’s unified local elections.”

Kaieda questioned the gender equality policy promoted by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, saying, “The current female empowerment policy of the Abe LDP-New Komeito government sets out to increase the number of females holding senior government positions. However, this concerns just a small select group of women. Although the government vows to facilitate women’s active role, it is problematic that the government only sees women as a means for economic development.”

Kaieda also touched on the issue of the right to collective self-defense and the comprehensive reform of the social security and taxation systems. Kaieda stated, “The bills related to the right to collective self-defense are expected to be submitted after the unified local elections. Accordingly, I would like members to voice their opposition to Prime Minister Abe’s questionable beliefs. Based on the agreement that the increased portion of the consumption tax would be utilized for stabilizing and enhancing social security, we, the DPJ, made the tough decision to increase the consumption tax. I consider, however, that the promise made between the three parties has already been broken. Our party will work harder than any other to stabilize and enhance social security.” Kaieda presented an outlook that in next year’s unified local elections, the DPJ will campaign on the pillars of stabilizing and enhancing social security and ensuring Japan remains a peaceful country.
