On January 16, DPJ Acting President Yoshiaki Takaki, Secretary General Yukio Edano, and International Department Director General Yukihisa Fujita met with a delegation from the Republic of Korea (ROK), consisting of Suh Chung Won, Chair of the Korea-Japan Parliamentarian’s Union and other Union members at party headquarters.
At the beginning of the meeting, Takaki welcomed the delegation’s visit to the DPJ and stated, “This year is significant because it marks the 50th anniversary of the normalization of Japan-Korea relations. Japan and Korea are important partners sharing common values. Although we are in the process of electing our party President, we will continue to cooperate to improve and further develop our ties whoever becomes leader of the DPJ.”
Suh first thanked Takaki and stated, “This year, we must do our best to improve the Korea-Japan relationship. My understanding is that our friendship deepened when the DPJ administration was in power in Japan. We would like to once again thank you for your understanding of South Korea’s position regarding various concerns. Now one of the most hoped matters among the people of South Korea is to restore the honor of the former comfort women. We would like the DPJ to cooperate with us on this issue.”
Edano referred to his and Fujita’s respective visits to South Korea last year and stated, “We would like to promote interparty exchanges and deepen our friendship with both the Saenuri Party and the New Political Alliance for Democracy.”
Other members of the Korean delegation also expressed their desire that the DPJ would act to improve the Japan-Korean relationship.
