DPJ holds 2nd meeting of liaison committee for Japanese captured in Syria
|
On January 25, the DPJ convened a second meeting of the Information Liaison Committee on Japanese Citizens Held Captive in Syria at party headquarters. President Katsuya Okada, Secretary General Yukio Edano and others heard an explanation about the current state of affairs regarding the incident from government officials responsible for handling the incident, and discussed the ongoing response.
Okada responded to reporters’ questions following the meeting, stating, “We engaged in various discussions in the spirit that we would like the Japanese captured to return home if at all possible, despite the extremely difficult situation. The government is doing their very best to deal with the incident, and there is very little that we can do independent of this, but we confirmed that our position of offering thorough backing for the government efforts remains unchanged.” He added, “If reports are correct, the response of the Jordanian government will be extremely important. I would like the government to make every effort to use the full range of Japan’s diplomatic powers to ensure the safe return home of the Japanese captured”
