Meeting of DPJ local branch executives held
|
On February 13, a meeting of the secretaries general and election campaign leaders from DPJ branches nationwide was held at party headquarters.
President Katsuya Okada looked back on the general election held at the end of last year, commenting: “I don’t think that we can really say that it was a ‘victory’ for us. In the 2003 and 2005 general elections we succeeded in gaining more than 20 million proportional representation votes, but in the last two general elections that figure dropped to some 9 million or so votes. This is a sign that the Japanese people are not fully ready to trust the DPJ again.” He reaffirmed his determination to rebuild the party, stating, “The next DPJ party convention (scheduled for March 1st, 2015) is the first step toward restoring their trust.”
Following this, members of the party executive reported on various items as follows, and a lively discussion was held.
●Secretary General Yukio Edano: the proposed agenda for the party convention.
●Acting President Akira Nagatsuma: the DPJ Headquarters for Constructing a Society Based on Mutual Coexistence.
●Acting President Renho: the DPJ Revitalization Headquarters and the party’s 300 day reform plan.
●Election Campaign Committee Chair Koichiro Gemba: (1) draft review of last year’s general election, (2) report on situation regarding prospective candidates to run in forthcoming unified local elections, and (3) plan for working toward the next national election.
●Gender Equality Headquarters Chair Mieko Kamimoto: (1) policy for preventing harassment, and establishment of committee to formulate measures to deal with this, and (2) policies for supporting women candidates.
