On April 26, DPJ President Katsuya Okada issued the following statement in response to the disaster that had befallen Nepal after a massive earthquake.
----Statement--------------------------------------------------------------------
We hear the huge earthquake that struck central Nepal on April 25 has killed and wounded many and caused massive damage, particularly in Nepal.
I would like to express my deepest condolences for those who have lost their lives in the disaster, as well as my sincere sympathy to all the countries and individuals who have been affected by the disaster, in particular Nepal and the Nepalese people.
We urge the Japanese government to do their utmost to quickly establish the scale of the damage caused by the earthquake and to work together with the governments of Nepal and of other nations in order to provide assistance for this emergency.
The DPJ has established a disaster response room and will engage in providing the necessary assistance.

Further to this, on April 27, the DPJ held a disaster response room meeting to receive a hearing from Ministry for Foreign Affairs bureaucrats regarding the state of the damage in the affected areas and of the assistance being provided by Japan, and to discuss the DPJ’s response to the disaster. At a meeting of the DPJ Standing Officers Council held that same day, Secretary General Yukio Edano reported on the necessary steps to be taken by the DPJ in order to provide assistance. He said that the party would be asking for donations from each of its Diet members, as well as calling on DPJ prefectural headquarters to organize street rallies urging members of the public to provide assistance for the disaster.
Moreover, on April 28, DPJ International Department Director-General Yukihisa Fujita paid a condolence call to the Embassy of Nepal in Tokyo, meeting Ambassador Madan Kumar Bhattarai. Fujita gave the Ambassador a message of sympathy from DPJ President Katsuya Okada addressed to Nepal’s Prime Minister Susil Koirala. He also asked about the assistance currently being provided and the needs of the affected areas so as to help the DPJ’s ongoing efforts to provide assistance.
