Okada meets with Korean Foreign Minister

On June 22, DPJ President Katsuya Okada met with Republic of Korea (ROK) Foreign Minister H.E. Mr. Yun Byung-se, currently on a visit to Japan.

At the start of the meeting, Okada expressed his appreciation to Yun and went on to say, “I am extremely concerned about the state of the relationship between Japan and the ROK, but also delighted that your meeting with Minister of Foreign Affairs Kishida yesterday and courtesy call on the Prime Minister today were both substantial. When looking at our bilateral relationship, what most concerns me is popular sentiment. The number of Japanese who view the ROK negatively is increasing. The popular sentiment of each nation towards the other should not be this bad under normal circumstances. I believe as politicians we should do our utmost to ensure that tensions do not worsen.”

Yun expressed his pleasure at meeting Okada for the first time in two and a half years, and stated, “No one has shown more interest in the state of the bilateral relationship than yourself. I hope that you will continue to lend us your support to further develop relations between our two nations.”

Following this, the two sides discussed the comfort woman issue, Japan’s proposed security legislation and North Korea.

The meeting was also attended by DPJ Policy Research Committee Chair Goshi Hosono and International Department Director-General Yukihisa Fujita.
