Statement strongly protesting North Korea’s claim to have tested a hydrogen bomb
|
On January 6, DPJ President Katsuya Okada issued the following statement:
Today, North Korea announced that it had tested a hydrogen bomb.
This is an outrage which threatens not only Japan but the peace of Asia and the international community as a whole. We issue a vigorous protest to North Korea regarding this act of folly, which clearly violates United Nations Security Council resolutions, and is a challenge to the international order including the nuclear non-proliferation treaty.
North Korea claims to have tested a hydrogen bomb. If that is truly the case, we have no alternative but to acknowledge that the nuclear threat it poses has greatly increased. The Japanese government should carry out appropriate intelligence gathering and analysis of North Korea’s intentions and the current state of its nuclear program, and properly ensure the security of our nation.
Furthermore, we urge the Japanese government to cooperate and work together with other members of the international community such as the United States, the Republic of Korea, China, and Russia, exercising Japan’s leadership as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council to prevent acts of provocation by North Korea.
