Five Opposition Parties submit two bills aimed at scrapping security legislation to Diet
|
On February 19, the DPJ, JIP, the Japanese Communist Party, the SDP and the People’s Life Party jointly submitted to the House of Representatives legislation for scrapping the Bill for the Development of Legislation for Peace and Security and the International Peace Support Law.
The proposal for abolishing the Bill for the Development of Legislation for Peace and Security would eliminate the potentially unconstitutional security legislation which was forced through the Diet in last year’s ordinary Diet session. The proposal for abolishing the International Peace Support Law would scrap, which creates a framework making it permanently possible to support the militaries of other nations, would scrap such framework and consider instead responding by implementing a special measures law in each individual case.
In the press conference held following the submission of the legislation, DPJ Diet Affairs Committee Chair Yoshiaki Takaki said, “The security legislation was enacted by the ruling parties using forcing tactics, despite the fact that 80% of the Japanese public still do not fully understand it. We will ensure that the legislation proposing its abolition is speedily debated by the Diet, and would like to create a nationwide debate on the issue. The five parties will pool our resources to ensure that the legislation is scrapped, and will continue to work hard to this end while listening to public opinion.”
