Okada receives a courtesy call from U.N.H.C.R. Commissioner Grandi

On March 2, DPJ President Katsuya Okada received a courtesy call from U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi inside the Diet building.

At the beginning of the meeting, Okada welcomed Grandi’s visit, saying, “We believe that the issue of refugees is crucial and therefore the Democratic Party of Japan is willing to cooperate with you so that Japan can continue to address it.”

Following this, Grandi expressed his appreciation and briefed Okada on the current situation regarding refugees. He also expressed strong expectations for Japan’s active role in the international community.

Both sides then exchanged views on the difficulty of distinguishing between ‘refugees’ and ‘migrants’, the response of European countries to the issue of refugees, and the G7 Ise-Shima Summit, due to take place in late May.

The meeting was also attended by the Chair of the DPJ Caucus in the House of Representatives Masaharu Nakagawa.
