In the afternoon of November 25, DPJ Diet Affairs Committee Chair Kenji Yamaoka attended a meeting of Diet Affairs Committee Chairs from the four opposition parties with the Japanese Communist Party, Social Democratic Party and the People's New Party, which was held within the Diet. As well as reporting on Secretary-General and Diet Affairs Committee Chair talks between the DPJ and the Liberal Democratic Party held earlier, Yamaoka discussed the response to an extension of the diet session with the counterparts from other three opposition parties.
Yamaoka later reported that, in the talk, the four parties reached a consensus on (1) their opposition to an extension of the Diet session, and (2) their intentions not to vote on the bill to revise the new anti-terrorism special measures law, the bill to revise the Law for Strengthening Financial Systems and other general legislation in the current Diet session. A response to an extension of the Diet session will be evaluated after any extension has been made.
In addition, Yamaoka indicated their intention not to debate bills related to the establishment of a consumer affairs agency in the current session of the Diet irrespective of the length of an extension because the legislation needs to be dealt with during an ordinary session of the Diet, emphasizing the necessity to debate the legislation in detail and the establishment of special committees.
