On November 27, DPJ Next Cabinet Next Minister of Foreign Affairs Yoshio Hachiro and Next Minister of Defense Keiichiro Asao, made the following statement:
Last night, multiple terrorist attacks occurred in the city of Mumbai, western India. Over 100 people including Japanese citizen Hisashi Tsuda, were killed and a few hundred people injured by gunfire and explosions. Some of the perpetrators remain holed up in a hotel with hostages. On behalf of the DPJ, we express our heartfelt condolences to the victims of these terrorist acts and the victim's families. We also pray for the safe recovery of those who have been injured.
No reason can justify indiscriminate terrorist attacks on civilians. We strongly condemn these attacks which are an extremely cowardly means of disrupting democracy through violence. We also urge the group responsible to immediately release their hostages.
The Japanese government must do everything it can to ensure the safety of Japanese citizens remaining in Mumbai and commit itself to gathering information and co-operating with the Indian government in order to help resolve this incident.
