In the evening on New Year's Eve, DPJ President Ichiro Ozawa appeared in a live Internet broadcast by Nico Nico Douga from Akihabara, Tokyo. Prior to this appearance, Ozawa visited the site of the Akihabara stabbing spree in early June, where he offered a bouquet of flowers and prayed for the victims.
He and the DPJ consider incidents like the stabbings in Akihabara to be a symbol of today's unequal society and great moral decay, and he used Akihabara as the setting for an event called "JAPAN WILL CHANGE! Online New Year's Debate with 10,000 People - Discussion on Japan's Crisis." The event was held to bring the year to a close by talking together about employment, economic and social problems.
