New Year's Message from DPJ President Ichiro Ozawa

We have finally begun the year in which the Democratic Party of Japan will push open the door to a new Japan. We welcome the start of this year of change and renew our resolve.

The DPJ is committed to eliminating anxiety over livelihoods and building for people new and better lives. That is why we will change the actual frameworks that affect people's livelihoods through action based on our key principle of "Putting People's Lives First".

This principle is at the core of the DPJ's long-held mission. The time for us to achieve our mission is at the next House of Representatives election.

The DPJ must achieve victory and take office in order to implement our "Five Pledges for New and Better Lives".

We pledge to eliminate wasteful expenditure, reform the pensions and medical systems, provide support for childrearing, reform working practices and revitalize the agriculture, forestry and fishing industries as well as small and medium-sized businesses. Putting these pledges into practices will revitalize Japan and reinvigorate the economy.

The DPJ has developed concrete policies to see these pledges through. Since the Japanese people gave our party a majority in the House of Councillors in the 2007 election, we have made full and adequate preparations for taking office. We are convinced of our ability to work and fight together to successfully achieve a change of government.

In this landmark year, I wish you good health and prosperity and ask for your further support as we, the Democratic Party of Japan, aim to achieve this high mission.
