On the evening of January 5, DPJ President Ichiro Ozawa addressed attendees at a New Year's event organized by the trade union JTUC-Rengo held in Tokyo and stated his determination to achieve politics that "puts people's lives first".

At the start of the meeting, JTUC-Rengo chairman Tsuyoshi Takagi, as a representative of the organizer, took the podium saying that he "could not agree" with the government's proposal for the second supplementary budget which includes a fixed amount payment to all households. As well as expressing his doubts over whether the measure would lead to economic recovery, he reiterated JTUC-Rengo's commitment to prioritizing measures to stimulate the economy and achieve employment stability.

Ozawa then spoke, expressing his hope that the New Year's event would be a great success and thanking JTUC-Rengo for supporting the DPJ over the previous year.

He emphasized that "2009 is a year for creating politics of the people, by the people and for the people", and called on all attendees to help the DPJ create an administration that will "put people's lives first" and install a [true]democracy by showing the will of the people.

Ozawa brought his speech to a close by restating the DPJ's determination to "fight hard to achieve our goals" and calling for further support from JTUC-Rengo during 2009.
