On the afternoon of January 14, Next Minister of Foreign Affairs Yoshio Hachiro and House of Councillors member Tadashi Inuzuka visited the General Mission of Palestine in Tokyo following the continued attacks by the Israeli military on the Palestinian autonomous region of the Gaza Strip. They met with Ambassador Waleed Ali Siam, who informed them about the current situation in the Gaza Strip and the relationships between the Palestinian Authority and the Islamic fundamentalist group Hamas which controls the Gaza Strip. Hachiro and Inuzuka said the DPJ would do all it could by appealing to both the Japanese government and the UN Security Council for an immediate ceasefire.
During the meeting, Next Foreign Minister Hachiro told Ambassador Siam of the DPJ's concern over the continued attacks on Gaza saying, "Conflict has once again broken out in the Gaza Strip and shows no sign of ending. We are extremely worried".
Hachiro also promised that the DPJ would call the Japanese government to provide emergency humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip and that, given Japan's position as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, the government should also work hard to persuade the international community to work towards the cessation of hostilities and the achievement of peace in the Middle East.
Finally, he said that, in order to see the fighting end as soon as possible, the DPJ would make wide-ranging calls to both parties to cease all military action and bring an end to the cycle of violence.
Hachiro and Inzuka also asked ambassador Siam to give the DPJ further information on the situation in the Gaza Strip at the DPJ’s foreign affairs committee meeting scheduled to be held during the following week.
