On May 13, DPJ Vice President Seiji Maehara met with former US Secretary of Defense William S. Cohen at party headquarters and engaged in an active exchange of opinions on foreign policy and defence issues. Maehara welcomed Cohen’s visit to Japan and expressed his pleasure at their being able to meet again.
Cohen explained that he was visiting Japan with the intention of exchanging views with a variety of Japanese opinion leaders regarding foreign policy and defence issues in the Asian-Pacific region. Following that he explained the current situation regarding the defence policy of the Obama administration. Furthermore, he also expressed his opinion on future defence cooperation between Japan and the United States.
Maehara stressed the importance of deepening bilateral understanding, saying “Last month, I visited the US, and discussed foreign policy and defence issues with a number of people, including Obama administration officials. I would like to continue with the close cooperation between Japan and the United States.”
