On June 14, DPJ Secretary General Katsuya Okada issued the following statement.
In today’s Chiba City mayoral race, Toshihito Kumagai, the DPJ-backed candidate, was successfully elected. We would like to express our appreciation to the residents of Chiba City who gave their support, as well as to all those who provided assistance during the campaign.
We believe that this election result shatters the “customary practice” of the deputy mayor becoming the major’s successor, as was the case with the outgoing mayor, who was arrested on charges of bribery, and brings to fruition the voices of voters calling for a shift to a city administration that works on behalf of city residents.
The fact that this is the second victory in succession under the new DPJ leadership, following on from the Saitama City mayoral election, has given us huge momentum. We will exert all our strength to ensure that we respond to the expectations of the residents of Chiba City and the Japanese people, both in the municipal government of Chiba and in national government.
The Democratic Party of Japan will succeed in achieving a change of government in the general election scheduled to be held shortly, and will definitely realise a politics that puts people lives first. We thank you for your support.
