Standing Officers Council formerly approves limitations on hereditary politicians

On June 9, the DPJ’s Standing Officers Council formerly approved the following limitations on hereditary politicians, based on the decisions made in the general meeting of the DPJ Political Reform Promotion Headquarters on April 27.

1. If the spouse or relative of the third degree or closer (direct or collateral relative by blood or marriage) of an incumbent DPJ Diet member proposes to inherit a Diet seat, following the retirement or transfer to another electoral district of the said Diet member, by running consecutively for office from the same electoral district in the next election, the party will not endorse the candidacy of said spouse or relative. “The same electoral district” here means either standing in the same single seat constituency or solely as a PR list candidate for the House of Representatives, and standing in either the same constituency or PR bloc for the House of Councillors.

2. The above conditions will be used as criteria for selecting candidates to stand in subsequent national elections, and will be implemented from the forthcoming 45th general election for the House of Representatives.
