On June 8, DPJ President Yukio Hatoyama referred to media reports citing US Secretary of State Clinton as saying that the United States is considering putting North Korea back on the list of state sponsors of terrorism. He told reporters, “It seems only natural,” expressing the opinion that such a response to North Korea’s strong-arm tactics would be welcome.
Regarding the disagreement within the government over the treatment of the head of Japan Post, Hatoyama pointed out that Prime Minister Aso’s decision to give the responsibility for dealing with this matter to Chief Cabinet Secretary Kawamura had resulted in a situation where nothing could be decided. He emphasised the cabinet’s failure to reach a decision on this issue indicates that the administration is not working as it should, saying: “A lack of leadership has brought about this kind of problem. A decision must be made swiftly. I felt this indicates that the administration is on its last legs.”
With regard to the forthcoming election for the Tokyo Metropolitan government, Hatoyama said that the residents of the metropolis were showing a favourable reaction toward the DPJ, and stated, “The benchmark for victory is to translate this momentum into sufficient gains over the LDP and become comparatively the largest party.”
