DPJ-backed candidate for Shizuoka gubernatorial decided

On June 16, a meeting of the DPJ Standing Officers Council convened expressly for that purpose decided to back the candidacy of Heita Kawakatsu, former President of Shizuoka University of Art and Culture, in the election for the governor of Shizuoka prefecture. The official campaign for the gubernatorial starts June 18 and polling is to be held on July 5.

DPJ President Yukio Hatoyama and Secretary General Katsuya Okada welcomed Kawakatsu to party headquarters on the afternoon of the same day. Hatoyama encouraged him, saying, “I would like you to do your best during the short deciding period of the election.” Kawakatsu explained his reasons for deciding to run for office, and promised to do his utmost to gain victory.

At the end of the meeting, Hatoyama and Okada flanked Kawakatsu and engaged in a firm handshake. They reaffirmed their determination to be united in engaging in a successful campaign.

The meeting was also attended by the Director-General of the Executive Office Hirofumi Hirano, the head of DPJ Shizuoka, Kazuya Shimba and member of the House of Representatives for Shizuoka No 6, Shu Watanabe.
