On June 25, the DPJ, along with the Social Democratic Party and the People’s New Party, held a joint emergency meeting in the Diet calling for the resignation of the President of Japan Post Nishikawa. In the meeting the parties stated their refusal to accept the government decision to have Nishikawa continue in his post, and vowed to call for his resignation, as well as to review the privatisation of the postal services in order to protect the rights of the Japanese people.
At the start of the meeting, Kazuhiro Haraguchi, Chair of the project team pursuing allegations into the scandal regarding the sale of the Kanpo no Yado, and DPJ Next Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications commented “What is the difference to the Meiji Era where zaibatsu seized the people’s assets. The postal services, which used to be public assets, were privatized and then further impoverished. The Koizumi/Takenaka privatization of the postal services was a private project. Let our three parties pool our strength and win our fight in order to protect the rights of the people.”
Following this, Yasumasa Shigeno, Secretary General of the Social Democratic Party, pointed out that close to 500 post offices were being forced to close, and the Secretary General of the People’s New Party Hisaoki Kamei expressed his party’s determination to bring about a change of government and engage in a fundamental review of postal privatization.
The meeting adopted a resolution stating that “Suspicions are deepening that in concert with the rallying call ‘From public to private’ ‘the people’s common assets have been divided up between corporations with inside links to the postal services and put to private use.’ Our three parties’ project team will further liaise to strengthen our successive ‘investigation of allegations”, and as well as calling for the resignation of President Nishikawa, we will continue to investigate the responsibility of Prime Minister Aso and Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications Sato.
