On July 3, DPJ Supreme Adviser Tsutomu Hata and Vice President Seiji Maehara met with the Chair of the Iran-Japan Parliamentary Friendship League, Dr. Alaeddin Boroujerdi, who is head of the country’s parliamentary committee on national security and foreign policy. The meeting was also attended by Next Minister of Foreign Affairs Yoshio Hachiro, Director General of the International Department Tetsundo Iwakuni and member of the House of Representatives Hideo Hiraoka for the DPJ.
At the start of the meeting, Hata welcomed the Iranian delegation, and explained about the shift from the long-standing LDP government to a DPJ government which looks likely to take place in Japan. Following this, Maehara expressed the party’s resolution to bring about a change of government at the fast approaching general election, and stressed that the historically friendly relations between Japan and Iran were bipartisan in nature, and that in the event of a change of government, the DPJ would like to deepen the bilateral relationship still further.
Iwakuni said that he welcomed the release of the American journalist of Japanese descent Roxana Saberi, who had been detained by Iranian authorities on spy allegations, and commented on the fact that an Iranian woman had recently been awarded a Japanese literary prize. In response, Boroujerdi said that women held a high position within Iranian society and commented that at Iranian universities female students outnumbered male students. He said that one of the visiting delegation was a female parliamentarian who was also a successful practicing psychologist.
Hachiro touched on the relationship between Iran and North Korea, and with relation to the threat posed to Japan by North Korea’s nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles, urged Iran, said to have a close relationship with North Korea to actively encourage that nation to behave in a peaceful manner. In response to these remarks, Boroujerdi spoke of the measures being taking toward the abolition of nuclear weapons, and emphasised that while even one nuclear weapon remains the threat still exists. He took the opportunity to express his congratulations on the appointment of a Japanese national, Yukiya Amano, as the new head of the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency), and said he hoped that Amano would implement thorough inspections that treated all nations, without exception, in a fair and equal manner and would go on to achieve results.
