On July 17, DPJ Secretary General Katsuya Okada met with US Assistant Secretary of State for East Asia and Pacific Affairs Dr Kurt Campbell at a Tokyo hotel. The two men are long-standing acquaintances, and engaged in a firm handshake, expressing their delight at being able to meet again.
During the meeting, a lively discussion took place based on the shared perception that it is important for the interests of both nations, as well as for East Asia as a whole, to continue to strengthen and develop the relationship of trust between Japan and the United States.
Furthermore, both men agreed that the ongoing dialogue they had engaged in over the course of many years had been extremely worthwhile in contributing toward mutual understanding, and confirmed their intention to continue such exchanges in future and further deepen the relationship of trust.
