On July 16, DPJ President Yukio Hatoyama met with Mongolian Prime Minister Sanjaa Bayar at a Tokyo hotel.
Bayar referred the purpose of his visit to Japan on this occasion, which was to discuss the direction of joint development of uranium resources by Japan and Mongolia, expressing the hope that, having strengthened bilateral cooperation, joint development could be realised not only of uranium but also of mineral resources, coal and gold, and that this would lead to the development of a new bilateral relationship.
He also stated that Japanese aid has fostered tremendous growth within Mongolia and stressed that it was important for the two nations to sign an EPA.
Hatoyama touched on the sense of mission he felt regarding gaining power at the forthcoming general election. He added that if a change of government were to occur, he would like to further develop the cooperative relationship between Japan and Mongolia, and stated that the DPJ would also like to make a significant contribution to promote the joint development of uranium resources by Japan and Mongolia.
