On August 4, DPJ Vice President Yoriko Madoka gave a speech to a gathering of ambassadors to Japan from the member countries of ASEAN, at a Tokyo venue. She stressed that the friendly relationship between the DPJ and the ASEAN countries was a long-lasting one, and explained that a change of government to a DPJ administration would lead to a period of tremendous change, in which Japan would be transformed from a centrally-administered society to one that gives sovereignty to the individual members of society and to the regions.
At the start of her speech, Madoka expressed her condolences on the recent passing away of former Philippine President Corazon Aquino, commenting, “For Japan, and in particular for Japanese women, former President Aquino, with her nickname of “Cory”, was a figure who symbolised courage and hope.” In response, the Philippine ambassador said, “Allow me to express my deep appreciation for your message of condolence.”
In the discussion following the speech, a lively exchange took place on such topics as the economic situation, the problem of an ageing society with a falling birthrate, and foreign language education in Japan.
The speech and discussion were conducted in a convivial atmosphere, with both sides sharing their recognition of the need to strengthen the solidarity between Japan and ASEAN in the midst of increasing globalisation.
