On August 30, voting took place in the 45th general election for the House of Representatives. The DPJ gained an outright majority, with its official candidates winning 308 seats, and a recommended candidate 1 seat.
This is the first time since the very first general election took place in 1890 that a real change of government has taken place, with a change in the majority party in the Diet and a switch between ruling and opposition parties. With this victory, a new page of Japanese history has been written.
In this general election, the DPJ has called for the realisation of a change of government, a shift from a bureaucratic-style cabinet to politics led by the people, the realisation of true democracy, and the establishment of regional sovereignty in place of a centrally-concentrated government. In addition, we have called for the implementation of economic policies such as a child allowance and an individual household allowance for farmers with the aim of directly supporting households, social security policies such as pensions, medical care and welfare, and employment policies such as assistance for job seekers.
Once it became clear that the party would win, President Yukio Hatoyama held a press conference and issued a message entitled, “Toward an even greater victory for the people”.
In the press conference he said that the party would not be intoxicated by sheer numbers, and “would undertake administration of the Diet and the government, with reference to the negative example provided by the LDP and Komeito coalition government.”
