On September 3, DPJ President Yukio Hatoyama received a courtesy call from the United States Ambassador to Japan John V. Roos at party headquarters. The two agreed on the need to further enhance Japan-US relations.

During the meeting, Ambassador Roos expressed his congratulations on the DPJ victory and said, “The relationship between Japan and the United States is a special and unique one,” pointing out the importance of further strengthening the bilateral relationship. The two agreed that Japan and the United States should deepen their cooperation in a variety of fields, such as climate change, renewable energy, nuclear non-proliferation, and bilateral cultural exchanges.

Hatoyama went on to comment that the concept of “fraternity”, which aims to ensure that every citizen has his or her place and role in society, and encourages people to value the happiness of others as their own, could also be applied to Japan-US relations, and stressed, “Improvements in the situation in the United States are welcome to Japan.” Roos indicated his agreement with this sentiment.
