On September 16, a plenary session of the House of Representatives was convened, and DPJ President Yukio Hatoyama nominated as the 93rd Prime Minister of Japan.
In the voting to nominate the Prime Minister, Hatoyama received 312 votes from the DPJ and Club of Independents caucus, 7 votes from the Social Democratic Party, 3 votes from the People’s New Party and 5 votes from other Diet members, for a total of 327 votes.
Upon receiving his nomination as Prime Minister, Hatoyama bowed several times in each direction, signifying his awareness of the weightiness of his new post.
Prior to the nomination of the Prime Minister, an election was held to choose the Speaker and Vice Speaker of the House of Representatives. The former Vice Speaker, the DPJ’s Takahiro Yokomichi, was elected as Speaker and the LDP’s Seishiro Eto as Vice Speaker.
Yokomichi gave a short speech following his election, saying, “It is truly an honour. I am keenly aware of the importance of this post. The Diet has a great mission which it has not possessed up until now. I will do my utmost to respond to the expectations and trust of the people.”
As the most senior member of the House, the DPJ’s Kozo Watanabe took to the podium to deliver the congratulatory message to the Speaker and Vice Speaker, saying, “Public expectations and interest are becoming ever greater…I firmly believe that you will be able to deliver satisfactory results in running the House smoothly and in developing healthy parliamentary politics, and thus fulfil the mission entrusted in you by the public.”
DPJ Diet member Takeaki Matsumoto was selected as Chair of the House Steering Committee.
