On September 28, a meeting between the leaders of the three coalition parties, the DPJ, the Social Democratic Party and the People’s New Party, was held at the Prime Minister’s residence.
In addition to Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama, the meeting was also attended by Secretary General Ichiro Ozawa, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for National Strategy Naoto Kan and Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirofumi Hirano for the DPJ.
In the meeting, the Prime Minister reported on his visit to the United States to attend the UN Assembly. The Chief Cabinet Secretary then explained that the estimated budget requests for fiscal 2010 are to be considered on a zero base, and that waste is to be eliminated and the aim is to work toward realising the policies pledged to the Japanese people in the DPJ Manifesto, and those present confirmed their agreement with this policy direction. Prime Minister Hatoyama expressed the opinion that it would be necessary to eliminate waste, while at the same time implementing economic stimulus measures.
Following the meeting, the first meeting of the cabinet committee for basic policy was held.
