On October 30, the Director General of the DPJ International Department Yukihisa Fujita met with a cross-party delegation of Korean parliamentarians, led by Nam Kyung-pil of the Grand National Party, at party headquarters. The meeting was also attended by Vice Director General of the International Department Harunobu Yonenaga, member of the House of Representatives Yasuko Komiyama, and members of the House of Councillors Naoki Kazama and Hisashi Tokunaga for the DPJ.
Fujita welcomed the delegation, referring to the fact that the first country to be visited by Prime Minister Hatoyama for the purposes of bilateral diplomacy was the Republic of Korea (ROK), and stressing that parliamentary exchanges between Japan and the ROK were important.
Nam said that he had visited the Prime Minister’s Office and met with Hatoyama, and commented that he had experienced at first hand the impact of the change of government that had taken place in Japan. He went on to express his expectations for and congratulations on the launch of the new DPJ administration.
The Korean side said that they could relate to Prime Minister Hatoyama’s proposal for an East-Asian Community and also expressed their expectations regarding this idea. A lively discussion was held on strengthening bilateral cooperation toward resolution of such issues as climate change and North Korea.
