On November 12, DPJ Secretary General Ichiro Ozawa welcomed a delegation from the Korean Democratic Party, headed by President Chung Se-hyun. The meeting was also attended by Chairman of the National Commission of Public Safety Hiroshi Nakai, and Director General of the International Department Yukihisa Fujita for the DPJ.

At the start of the meeting, Chung expressed his congratulations to the DPJ on having achieved a change of government, and conveyed the expectations of the Korean Democratic Party that the DPJ’s succession to the position of ruling party in Japan would lead to a further deepening of the relationship of friendly cooperation between Japan and the Republic of Korea (ROK).

Following the meeting, Fujita spoke to members of the press, informing them that Chung had said, “We welcome the fact that the DPJ has taken power. I would like to deepen the exchanges between our two parties.” He said Chung had commented that his party would like to learn from the DPJ’s election victory, saying, “I would like you to teach us the secret of your electoral success.”

Chung had also stated that the Korean Democratic Party (formally the Uri Party) had served as the ruling party in the ROK for around 10 years, and expressed his wish that “The Democratic Party of Japan will be able to stay in power for more than 10 years.”

In addition, Fujita said that the two sides discussed issues relating to North Korea and party-to-party exchanges. He told reporters Chung had said that the Korean people also had expectations of the new DPJ government, and had indicated that he would like to see the DPJ work toward building a closer bilateral relationship.
