On December 2, following a meeting with BoJ governor Shirakawa held earlier that day, Prime Minister and DPJ President Yukio Hatoyama told reporters the government and the BoJ shared the perception that it was necessary to free the Japanese economy from the current deflationary situation as soon as possible. He revealed that based on this shared perception, the two sides had decided to make every effort to escape from the current deflationary situation and rebuild the economy, while paying close attention to ongoing economic conditions, with the government implementing economic measures and the BoJ carrying out monetary easing. He added that he wanted to create an environment in which the government and the BoJ could meet whenever there was a need, and stressed, “I think highly of the BoJ’s speedy response on this occasion.”
Hatoyama was asked for his opinion of the new strategy toward Afghanistan announced by US President Barack Obama. He responded, “The United States has decided on her strategy toward peace in Afghanistan, and Japan for her part, has decided on new assistance measures” and added that the two countries should each cooperate in their own way in order to ensure that Afghanistan can return to a stable political and economic state as soon as possible.
