On December 12, DPJ Secretary General Ichiro Ozawa, in response to a question from the floor following a speech at Seoul National University, commented on the issue of giving the vote in local elections to foreigners with permanent resident status, and legislation relating to this. Ozawa said that in order for the Japanese government to show their position, “I believe that this legislation should be submitted properly as a government-sponsored bill. The Hatoyama Cabinet feels the same way, and I think that this is likely to be realized during the ordinary Diet session next year. This is an issue that the Japanese side should actively engage in.”
